The correct visualization of data is a powerful way to promote, advocate and ensure respect for human rights and access to health for women living with HIV.

ICW Latina works on the promotion and defence of human rights with an emphasis on sexual and reproductive health and rights and non-violence against women with HIV. Its mission is to be a network of women leaders who actively participate to harmonise regional efforts.

Efficient and accessible communication wherever you are

THE STORY

From December 2015 to April 2016, ICW Latina was commissioned to map current legislation related to the rights of women living with HIV, specifically laws, policies and regulations, in 18 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In order to support national and regional advocacy processes in favour of the human rights of women living with HIV, it is necessary to present all the information collected in the most user-friendly way possible.

It is not only a data visualisation project but also a project for sharing valuable information.

THE CHALLENGE

The study conducted has an impact in many areas, from raising awareness of legislation to being a source of consultation for decision-making.

The data were of different types. Some were presented in a simple way, with numbers only, but in other cases it involved technical information from regulations and laws: the relationship between quantitative and qualitative. The most challenging thing was how to introduce the user to the data.

OUR APPROACH

The analysis of people's needs, as well as the context, went hand in hand with a lot of work with the data: separating it, combining it and giving it a different and attractive presentation.

The possibility to evaluate the data generated by the mapping, in terms of laws and standards, helped us to translate the very technical information into numbers and colours.

THE RESULTS

We greatly simplified the reading of the mapping: the introduction to the tool informs the user of a map, then drill down to specific criteria, as well as their numerical relationship, and finally gets to the rules and laws.

This structure allowed users to decide what their information need is and not to navigate through the whole tool to locate what they want to know.

Data is really complex when the end user of the data is not understood
